The Problem

What Is Somatics

Somatics is a method of retraining your nervous system through deliberate movement.

You don’t stretch. You don’t force anything. Instead, you:

  1. Deliberately tighten a muscle group (so your brain can feel it again)
  2. Slowly relax it (so your brain learns it can)
  3. Pause and feel the difference

That’s it. Repeat that pattern through your whole body, and something remarkable happens:

Your muscles return to their natural resting length. Your pain decreases. Your movement becomes free again.

Why Stretching Doesn’t Work (And Why This Does)

Here’s the neuroscience bit (I promise it’s simple):

When muscles are chronically tight, they’re already shortened and can’t lengthen. Stretching triggers your stretch reflex even harder, giving you temporary relief then back to tight.

Somatics engages your cortical brain through deliberate contraction, overriding signals from your spinal cord and subcortex. Now you’re in control. You can voluntarily relax—and the tension stays gone.

The stretch reflex protects your muscles. Somatics just puts you back in charge.
